What exactly is propane? Propane is a safe, cleaner-burning alternative fuel. It is a byproduct of natural gas processing and petroleum refining. Because it is stored as a liquid under pressure and turns into a gas when released, it is incredibly easy to transport and store. This makes it a highly reliable energy source for properties that are located off a natural gas grid.
Is propane safe to use at my home or business? Absolutely. The propane industry is strictly regulated by stringent safety codes and standards. Propane tanks are constructed from heavy-duty steel and are designed to withstand extreme pressure and harsh weather conditions. Furthermore, propane is nontoxic and will not harm soil or water if a leak occurs. To make leak detection easy, manufacturers add an odorant that smells similar to rotten eggs or a skunk’s spray.
What should I do if I smell gas? Safety always comes first. If you detect that distinct rotten egg odor, you must act immediately. Put out any smoking materials or open flames. Do not operate any light switches, appliances or telephones, as a spark could ignite the gas. Evacuate everyone from the building or area right away. Once you are safely away from the property, call Hill Gas and your local emergency services to report the leak, and do not return until a qualified technician clears the area.
How often will I need a propane delivery? Your delivery frequency depends on your usage habits, the size of your tank, and the number of appliances drawing from it. A home using propane solely for a kitchen stove will need far fewer deliveries than a business using it for daily operations and heavy-duty heating. We recommend signing up for our Keep Full automatic delivery service so that our team can monitor your usage patterns and ensure that your tank is filled before your propane level gets too low.
Does propane expire? Unlike gasoline or diesel fuel, propane does not degrade or expire over time. It will remain perfectly viable in your tank for decades, making it an excellent choice for backup generators or for seasonal properties that do not see year-round use.
Brownwood has the most fitting motto: “Feels like home.”
The town’s location along the Pecan Bayou led to it being settled by cattle ranchers and farmers early in the 19th century. When Brown County was organized, in 1852, Brownwood was chosen as the county seat. Both the town and the county are named for an early settler, Henry Stevenson Brown.
Brownwood grew steadily after that, thanks to its location along the Western Trail, providing opportunities for lodging houses, saloons and stores. In the 1870s, the state of Texas began offering land for farming, with cotton becoming a chief agricultural product.
During World War II, Brownwood was home to Camp Bowie, a U.S. Army base that held up to 80,000 soldiers at one time. During World War II, it housed approximately 2,700 German prisoners of war who were loaned out to area farms as day laborers.
Today, Brownwood is a Hill Country hub for outdoor activities such as fishing, camping and other recreation. Hunters love the area for its diverse wildlife, including white-tailed deer, doves, quails, hogs and turkeys. Downtown Brownwood has lots of cultural activities at locations including the Brownwood Lyric Theatre, the Brownwood Art Center and the Brown County Museum of History, along with local bars, restaurants, galleries and shops.
Notable Brownwood natives and residents include:
Bob Denver, the actor best known for his iconic roles as Gilligan on “Gilligan’s Island” and Maynard G. Krebs on “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,” both classic 1960s sitcoms.
Case Keenum, a quarterback who set NCAA records for passing yards, completions, and touchdown passes (tied) while playing at the University of Houston. He has played for the Houston Texans, the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams, the Minnesota Vikings, the Denver Broncos, the Washington Redskins (now Commanders), the Cleveland Browns, the Buffalo Bills and the Chicago Bears.
Candy Barr, an actress, model and burlesque dancer whose real name was Juanita Dale Slusher.
Ray Hildebrand and Jill Jackson, Howard Payne College (now University) classmates who created the band Paul & Paula. They were best known for their first song, “Hey, Paula,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Pop chart in 1962.
Madylin, Sullivan and Sawyer Sweeten, child actors who portrayed the Barone children on the sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond.”
Drew and Tim Womack, brothers and country musicians, who first gained attention in the band Sons of the Desert, where Drew was the lead singer and Tim sang backup vocals and played lead guitar. They had eight songs reach the Billboard Hot Country Music charts, including the Top 10 hit “Whatever Comes First” in 1997. Drew is the current lead singer for the band Lonestar.
Robert E. Howard, an early-20th-century writer of pulp fiction who was the creator of the character Conan the Barbarian. He is regarded as the founder of the heroic fantasy subgenre, also known as “sword and sorcery.”
Clint Walker, an actor who appeared in films including The Ten Commandments and The Dirty Dozen. He is best known for portraying the lead character, Cheyenne Bodie, in the classic Western drama Cheyenne.
