Here at Hill Gas, we offer our customers wireless propane tank monitors. These devices allow both homeowners and the Hill Gas team to receive real-time information about fuel levels via a wireless network. When your fuel levels hit a certain point, we schedule your next delivery, helping ensure that you never face a fuel run-out or need an emergency propane delivery.
Customers who do not opt into a service like this or our complimentary Keep Full automatic delivery program will have to monitor and track their own fuel levels, which requires reading a propane tank gauge.
How do you do that? Hill Gas is here to walk you through it.
Propane tanks come in a variety of sizes. Tanks that are 100 gallons or more usually come with a gauge that can be found under your tank’s lid.
Gauges are typically round dials that look similar to speedometers or meat thermometers.
A gauge will have numbers surrounding its circumference as well as a single pointer needle that lines up with a specific number. Whichever number the pointer lines up with represents how much propane is left in your propane tank as a percentage. So, if the needle is lining up with the number 50, your tank is 50% full.
When you are tracking your fuel levels, it is important to remember that a propane tank is considered full at the 80% point. This is a safety precaution. Propane is in liquid form when it is in a tank and expands as temperatures rise. That additional 20% provides the room the fuel needs to safely expand.
Therefore, a 120-gallon tank safely holds about 96 gallons of propane, a 500-gallon tank safely holds about 400 gallons of propane, and so on.
Hill Gas recommends scheduling your next fuel delivery when your tank is 20% full. This should give you enough time to coordinate a delivery without having to worry about completely running out of fuel.
