Why Isn’t My Propane Tank 100% Full After Delivery?

Leaving extra room in your tank is important!

propane tank Hamilton, TX Did you know that a propane tank is considered full at the 80% point? In fact, a propane tank should never be 100% full, even right after your propane provider has come to your Central Texas home to fill it. Hill Gas is here to give you a look at why.

Propane tank levels explained

Your propane tank is not 100% full after a propane delivery to help protect you, your home and your family. It really comes down to a matter of safety.

The propane in a propane tank is in liquid form and since liquids expand as temperatures rise, there needs to be room in your propane tank for this inevitable expansion. So only filling your tank to the 80% point leaves the space that is needed for the gas to expand. Filling a tank beyond this point can potentially be dangerous.

Choosing a propane tank that works for you

Propane tanks come in a variety of sizes. The standard sizes that propane tanks come in are 120-gallon, 250-gallon, 500-gallon and 1,000-gallon.

Selecting the size that will work best for you and your home depends on a few different variables. When trying to determine what size propane tank you need you need to consider:

Keep in mind that even if you have a neighbor whose house is the same size as yours that does not mean that you should automatically get the same size propane tank that he or she has. His or her propane needs may be different than yours, so investing in the same size propane tank may not make sense for you and your home.

Also remember that, based on what is explained above about tanks only being 80% full at a time, the size of your propane tank does not equate to how much propane is inside that tank. For example, 96 gallons of propane can safely go in a 120-gallon propane tank at a time. A 500-gallon tank can be safely filled with about 400 gallons of fuel at a time.

Once your tank levels reach about 20%, you should schedule your next order of fuel. This typically gives you enough time to coordinate a delivery without having to stress about running out of propane completely.
